The short answer is yes. You can negotiate your listing broker’s commission and by extension the total compensation paid to agents in the sale of your home. Many listing agents charge a commission equal to 6% of the sales price, but that commission can easily be negotiated down in your favor. For instance, if you are selling your Sacramento home for two million dollars, you should be able to negotiate a lower commission than the 6% norm. If you are selling a home for over one million you may want to consider a sliding scale commission structure in which the commission rate varies according to predefined tiers in the sales price. For instance, the real estate agent may earn a 5% commission for a sale price equal to or lesser than one million dollars and a 6% commission on any amount over one million dollars. This sliding scale gives the agent an added incentive to bring you the highest and best offer.
